1.erosion- the process by which soil and sediments are transferred from one location to another usually by wind, water, ice, and gravity. It is to destroy by wearing away. Examples of erosion in El Yunque are chemical and mechanical erosion that are seen in the rock and soil erosion.
2. drip tip- one mechanism employed by tropical plants to remove the excess water from the leaf surface. An example is when plants with an elongated leaf tip get rid of the excess water when the water drips off from the leaves.
3. epiphytes- a plant that derives its moisture and nutrients from the air and rain and grows usually on another plant. Examples of epiphytes in El Yunque are bromeliads, orchids, and lichens.
4. shallow root system- when plants develop shallow roots to survive when soils are inundated or saturated for long periods of time and generally grow beneath the forest floor. The roots do not penetrate deeply into the soil. Examples of this are Zoysiagrasses, Tsugacanadensis, and Buttress trees.
5. vines- plants whose stem don't require support and which climbs by tendrils or twining or creeps along the ground. Examples of vines in El Yunque are Lianas, Trumpet Vines and Pipers.
6.lianas- woody air plant vines that wrap around tree trunks and limbs. An example of these in El Yunque is the Liana Vines.
7. emergent layer- is found only in tropical rainforest. It is composed of a few trees that stand out over the canopy. Examples of these are the tallest trees.
8. canopy layer- the top layer of a rainforest which is the tops of trees with its branches and leaves. Examples of things found in this layer are the tops of tall trees, many animals and leaves.
9. understory- the layer below the canopy in the tropical rainforest. It is mostly made up of are tree trunks, young and smaller trees and air plants. Examples of plants in this layer are ferns, vines and air plants.
10.forest floor- the bottom layer of a tropical rainforest that has few plants growing because the soil is very thin. It is mostly dead plants, fallen trees trunks covered with moss, ferns and fungi. These are some of the examples found in that layer.
11. water system- a river and all its branches; a system of supplying water. Examples of this in El Yunque are the numerous streams, the six major rivers and waterfalls liked La Coca Falls and La Mina Falls.
12. flowering plants- plants which have stamen and pistils and produce true seeds. Some examples of these are birds of paradise, hibiscus, plumerias, and heliconias.
13. non-flowering plants- plants that do not bear flowers or seeds. Example of these are ferns and mosses.
